Al-Shabab’s action has no place in Islam

By Othman Mahamud

It is important to note that Al-Shabaab does not represent the true teachings of Islam. The actions of this militant group are in direct contradiction to the principles of peace, compassion, and justice that are at the core of the Islamic faith.

One of the key verses in the Quran that speaks against the actions of Al-Shabaab is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:190), which states: “Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.” This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding excessive violence and unjustified aggression in all conflicts, including those that are fought in the name of religion.

Another relevant verse can be found in Surah Al-Maidah (5:32), which states: “On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone slew a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew the whole people: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole people.” This verse highlights the sanctity of human life and emphasizes the importance of avoiding harm to innocent individuals, regardless of their religion or background.

Finally, Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13) states: “O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well-acquainted (with all things).” This verse emphasizes the importance of unity, respect, and understanding among all people, regardless of their religious or cultural differences.

In conclusion, the actions of Al-Shabaab are in direct violation of the principles of peace, compassion, and justice that are central to the teachings of Islam. The verses from the Quran quoted above serve as a powerful reminder that violence and aggression are not acceptable in any circumstance, and that all people, regardless of their background or beliefs, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
